Bonn’s Journey in Vietnam
Vietnam is a country that captures your heart the moment you arrive. From lantern-lit towns to imperial cities and buzzing metropolises, every stop feels like stepping into a new story. On this trip, I explored Hoi An, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta, and the Cu Chi Tunnels — each offering something unforgettable.
Hoi An – Lanterns and the Coconut River
Hoi An feels like a living postcard. Its UNESCO-listed Ancient Town is lined with tailor shops, cafés, and colorful houses. By day, it’s perfect for cycling and sampling local dishes like cao lầu and bánh mì. For a unique experience, take a basket boat ride through the Coconut River, where locals demonstrate traditional fishing techniques — and even spin the boats for fun.
At night, lanterns light up the Thu Bồn River, and boats glide slowly past, creating a magical scene.
Hue – Imperial History and Countryside Rides
Just a short drive or a train ride from Hoi An, Hue is the former imperial capital and home to the vast Imperial Citadel, royal tombs, and peaceful pagodas.
A guided bike or motorcycle tour is the perfect way to explore Hue’s countryside, taking you past rice paddies, small villages, and hidden temples. Don’t miss bún bò Huế, the city’s spicy beef noodle soup that locals proudly claim is the best in Vietnam.
Ho Chi Minh City – Energy on Two Wheels
Formerly Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s most dynamic hub, where colonial landmarks meet bustling markets and endless streams of motorbikes.
Highlights include the War Remnants Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Central Post Office. For a truly local experience, join a nighttime motorcycle food tour to discover hidden eateries. End the evening at a rooftop bar, soaking in the skyline and the city’s electric energy.
Mekong Delta – Life on the Water
South of Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta is a world of rivers and canals. Life here moves at river pace: floating markets trade fresh produce, sampans glide beneath coconut palms, and villagers greet visitors with fruit and tea.
A day trip offers a peaceful contrast to the city’s busy streets and a window into rural Vietnamese life.
Cu Chi Tunnels – A Glimpse Underground
Just outside Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi Tunnels tell the story of wartime resilience. This underground network once sheltered soldiers and villagers during the Vietnam War.
Visitors can explore short sections of the tunnels and learn about the strategies used to survive — an experience that is both fascinating and humbling.
Vietnam is a country of contrasts — ancient yet modern, peaceful yet full of life. Whether you’re paddling down Hoi An’s Coconut River, riding through Hue’s countryside, zipping across Ho Chi Minh City on a motorcycle, cruising the Mekong, or crawling through the Cu Chi Tunnels, every moment leaves a lasting impression.
