India: A Journey of Contrasts, Chaos, and Captivating Beauty

Experiencing India with My Daughter: A Journey Beyond Tourism

What an absolute joy it is to share this experience with my eldest, Isabella (@izzyvelardo). WOW. Being together at one of the New Seven Wonders of the World?! It feels surreal seeing the Taj Mahal with our own eyes. One of (if not the) most famous testaments of love in the world, and I got to see it with my daughter.

This stunning marble structure took 22 years to build and has stood the test of time since 1653 when it was completed. Standing there, dressed in traditional Indian sarees, we were both simply speechless. It's absolutely gorgeous - no photo can truly capture its magnificence.

India: You’re Chaotic, Beautiful, Confronting Reality

India, you are everything I expected and also everything I didn't expect! We are extremely lucky to be experiencing this journey as hosted guests in 5-star luxury staying at Oberoi hotels throughout, having the luxury sanctuary to return to after the incredible days of experiencing.

India is full of contrasts, it's raw, real and authentic. Yes, the streets can be chaotic, there's poverty, and rubbish is part of the everyday. It's confronting.

Look deeper though and you'll see the heart of this country — warm, resilient people, vibrant culture, ancient wonders, colour, chaos and magic all rolled into one. It's one of the most unforgettable journeys you'll ever take.

A Tale of Two Cities: New Delhi vs. Old Delhi

New Delhi is full of wide open rides, no traffic chaos and so much greenery everywhere you look! Did you know Delhi is considered one of the greenest cities in the world? With over 1,600 monuments spread across what was once eight different cities throughout history, Delhi is a historian's dream.

Our incredible guide Sanjeep shared that Delhi has transformed its public transport system to use CNP (Compressed Natural Gas) instead of diesel or petrol for all public vehicles, making it more environmentally friendly.

Then there's the contrast to Old Delhi - the poverty, the rubbish everywhere, people living in the middle of the highways, the smells, the excitement, the thrill, the constant horns blowing and the traffic chaos. It's a sensory overload that both challenges and captivates you.

Sacred Journeys: The Pilgrims of the Ganges

One of the most profound experiences was witnessing pilgrims carrying water from the holy Ganges River. Sanjeep explained that these devoted individuals walk 200-300 kilometers over 20-30 days to collect this sacred water.

This ancient tradition, known as Kanwar Yatra, sees devotees (called Kanwariyas) carrying the holy Ganges water to offer at Shiva temples. The journey is a form of penance and devotion, with pilgrims believing that carrying this water will cleanse their sins and bring blessings. The water itself, Ganga Jal, is considered the purest and most sanctifying, used in various religious rituals and believed to have transformative powers.

Watching these pilgrims, many walking barefoot with containers balanced on decorated poles, was a humbling reminder of the deep spiritual connection many Indians have with their traditions.

Luxury Amidst the Chaos

The contrast between the bustling streets and our luxurious accommodations couldn't have been more pronounced. The Oberoi hotels we experienced were nothing short of extraordinary - havens of tranquility amidst the beautiful chaos outside.

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm smiles, fragrant flower garlands, and refreshing welcome drinks. The hospitality was impeccable - staff remembered our names, anticipated our needs, and went above and beyond to ensure our comfort.

One evening, after returning from a particularly hot day of exploration, we found our room transformed with rose petals scattered across freshly turned-down beds, aromatherapy diffusers creating a calming atmosphere, and handwritten notes wishing us sweet dreams. These thoughtful touches made all the difference.

Royal Wonders: Exploring India's Magnificent Forts

Out of all the places we've explored so far, Amer Fort has been a standout! This grand, golden fortress is simply amazing. From mirrored halls to royal courtyards, every corner feels like a scene from a fairytale.

We also visited Agra Fort – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an absolute must for history lovers. This sprawling red sandstone fortress was once the royal residence of Mughal emperors, filled with palaces, gardens, and secret passageways. You can even see the Taj Mahal from the balcony where the emperor who built it was once imprisoned by his own son.

It's powerful, beautiful, and surprisingly peaceful – the perfect spot to slow down, take it all in, and imagine life in the 1500s.

The People: Curiosity, Warmth, and Cultural Contrasts

One of the most memorable aspects of our journey was the people we encountered. In the villages, Isabella and I felt like movie stars! The wonderment and interest of the village people staring so intently at our skin, hair, and eyes was fascinating. They asked for photos with us as they'd never seen white people before.

Far from being intrusive, their curiosity came from a place of genuine friendliness and interest. Children would run up to us, giggling and waving, while adults would approach with shy smiles, requesting selfies. We obliged happily, understanding that for many, we might be the first Westerners they had ever seen in person. These interactions, though brief, created connections that transcended language barriers.

Yet India also showed us its social complexities. We witnessed transgender people begging on the streets, a stark reminder of how certain communities remain marginalised in Indian society. Despite the country's progress in many areas, these individuals often face rejection from their families and limited employment opportunities, forcing many to beg for survival.

Sanjeep also pointed out the immigrants from Bangladesh who have settled in various parts of the country, adding another layer to India's diverse social fabric.

Nature's Pharmacy: The Miracle Neem Tree

During our journey, Sanjeep introduced us to the remarkable neem tree, a botanical wonder that serves multiple purposes in Indian daily life. This tree is truly a natural pharmacy - its leaves, bark, and oil are used for medicinal purposes, creating soap, face wash, and even protecting stored grains from insects.

The neem's natural antibacterial and antifungal properties make it perfect for skincare products that treat acne and other skin conditions. When placed with stored grains, neem leaves keep insects away naturally, eliminating the need for chemical pesticides. It's fascinating how one tree can provide so many solutions!

An Unexpected Adventure: Our Air India Flight

Our journey wasn't without its excitement! Our Air India flight from Jaipur to Mumbai made an unexpected U-turn shortly after takeoff due to a suspected technical issue. The pilots, prioritizing safety, returned to Jaipur where engineers thoroughly checked the aircraft. Fortunately, it turned out to be a false alarm, and after confirming everything was in perfect working order, we continued our journey to Mumbai.

While momentarily concerning, this experience showcased the airline's commitment to passenger safety. It's now a story we can laugh about and adds another layer to our adventure!

The Dream Team: TBI Holidays and Our Guide Sanjeep

This incredible journey wouldn't have been possible without the exceptional team at TBI Holidays, led by Rajesh and his dedicated staff. As part of a successful travel agent famil organised by Groups by Beyond, which marked a significant milestone for the Australian travel industry, we were in the best hands possible.

Our guide Sanjeep deserves special mention - his knowledge, patience, and passion for sharing his country with us was extraordinary. From explaining the historical significance of monuments to sharing insights about daily life and traditions, Sanjeep transformed our trip from a simple sightseeing tour into a deep cultural immersion.

The famil, which involved 12 Australian travel agents, has strengthened trade relationships between Australia and India while giving us invaluable firsthand experience to share with our clients.

A Mother-Daughter Bond Strengthened Through Travel

What makes this journey even more special is experiencing it with Isabella. Watching her eyes light up as we explored ancient palaces, seeing her interact with local children, and sharing quiet moments of reflection at historical sites – these are memories I'll cherish forever.

Travel has a way of strengthening bonds, and this trip to India has certainly deepened our connection. We've navigated chaotic streets together, marveled at architectural wonders side by side, and processed the complex emotions that come with witnessing both extreme beauty and harsh realities.

Beyond Tourism: A Professional Journey

As you may have seen in my stories from last month, this wasn't just a holiday – it was a familiarisation trip that gave us invaluable firsthand experience that we'll be incorporating into our clients' holidays.

The luxurious hotels we visited, the UNESCO world heritage sites we explored, food we tried, and what to expect from the surroundings when you're there – all of this knowledge will help us create more authentic, immersive experiences for our travellers.

India is filled with so many things that are different from anything we've experienced in our other trips in Asia and vastly different from destinations in Europe. It's part of our commitment to our clients to find out what makes every destination amazing – how to make the most out of your holiday there, and crafting itineraries that will match your desire for adventure and exploration!

We balance it all carefully and make personalised recommendations that will perfectly realise YOUR travel dreams.
